Join MASS MoCA Museum Educators for a series of free workshops for all ages during school break, April 20–24. Workshops will take place in Kidspace at 11am every day, and each will focus on a different art medium and process. Come get inspired, learn something new, and make a project to take home! The ArtBar will also be open for drop-in art-making throughout the day.
RSVP encouraged but not required. (Note: Some workshops may be capped based on attendance; RSVPs will be honored before walk-ups.) Workshops are open to all ages; however, younger children may need support from guardians. All children must be accompanied by an adult in Kidspace.
Monday, April 20: Paper Quilling with David Waxman
Inspired by Carly Glovinski’s flowers, Louise Bourgeois’ spiral motif, and the budding colors and shapes of spring, this workshop will teach participants the decorative art of paper quilling – a practice that dates back to at least the 15th century. Attendees will receive a brief introduction to the art form, practice the skills of paper quilling, and create a finished piece to take home.
Tuesday, April 21: Entwined: A Movement Theater Lab with Nina Keneally
Drawing inspiration from Louise Bourgeois’ sculptures, this workshop will explore the essential forms and themes in the artist’s works through movement and theater exercises. Attendees will have the opportunity to play and move in Kidspace through a series of guided exercises designed to help participants understand and connect with the sculptures on view.
Wednesday, April 22: Handmade Beads with Beth Davis
Guided by the wearable works in Jimena Sarno’s exhibition, Rhapsody and the process of learning a new craft from another person, attendees will discover how to make different types of handmade beads. Primarily working with model magic and clay, participants will be guided through different techniques to create one-of-a-kind beads which they can take home to make into jewelry.
Thursday, April 23: Paper Kintsugi with Erick Ramos-Jacobo
Inspired by one of the many repair methods used in Jimena Sarno’s exhibition Rhapsody, this workshop introduces participants to kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, through paper reconstruction. Working with delicate materials and a slow, attentive process, young artists will explore repair as a creative act. Patience and care will be essential, and in exchange, each participant will leave with a unique gold-filled paper creation.
Fri, April 24: Scratch Art Portraits with Heidi Whitus
Inspired by Analia Saban’s encaustic work Flow Chart (Painting a Portrait) in Technologies of Relation, this workshop will explore the influences behind this piece and consider how portraits are composed. Attendees will then create a multilayered work of art using drawing and painting materials and follow the steps in the flow chart to create an original etched portrait.
